The market town of Ulverston – Cumbria is in the area of South Lakeland district of Cumbria which is in the north – west part of England. The most visible land mark is the Hoad Monument. This is a concrete structure that was built in the year of 1850. It was built to commemorate Sir John Barrow, the statesman and local resident.
Along with this monument there is a scenic views of the surrounding areas of Morecambe Bay and several parts of Lake District. The town is known to have so many pubs and shops too for its local residents. Most are located near the Market Street where at the head of the street there is a war memorial that was put there for all of those who died in World War One.
During the month of April the 28th 2009 a huge earthquake hit the town. It was recorded to be measured at 3.7 on the Richter scale with some tremors that were felt as far as south Cumbria and also it was felt in north Lancashire too. But the damage was known to be minimal.
The name of Ulverston was first recorded into the Domesday book in the year of 1086, but as Ulverestun. Locally the town was also known as Oostan and there were other variations of the name that was recorded over the years too. The market charter for the town was granted in 1280 by Edward the 1st. Which was for the market on every Thursday, but now Ulverston keeps the market opened on Thursday and Saturday too.
Over the years there were many famous people who have called the town their home. Such people like Sir John Barrow who was born in Dragley Beck. Norman Birkett who was the man who represented Britain during the Nuremberg Trials. There was also the mother of Bill Haley, the famous rock and roll star. And there was Arthur Jefferson the soldier that was awarded the Victorian Cross. Also Stan Laurel of the Laurel and Hardy comedy team was born there too.
Ulverston town has a railway which serves its people with transportation on the Furness Line. It runs from Barrow – in -Furness on up to Lancaster and then finally to the Manchester airport. The railway is s little distance in the centre of town. Also the town has quite a few buses too that serve the people with more transportation.
Ulverston also calls itself the Festival Town because of all the festivals that take place there that were held over the years. One renowned festival that is very popular is the Lantern Procession. Hundreds of people are known to in the area create lanterns that are made of tissue and willow.
