Premier League champions Manchester United have signed winger Ashley Young from fellow league side Aston Villa after persuading the 25-year-old to agree a deal worth in the region of 17 million pounds. The player will now turn out for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side for five years at the very least, with United fans hopeful in light of that fact that Young will be able to hand his new club the best years of his career.
The transfer was confirmed following many months of speculation regarding the future of Young at Villa, with the winger deciding to stay at the club for a couple of years after he came to the forefront of the public imagination with a number of eye-catching performances on the wing. The player’s sense of loyalty was shaken abruptly, however, when serious news of United’s interest in him after four and a half years with Aston Villa was made public. It surely seems likely that not a single Villa fan will blame the winger for taking on a challenge that will allow him to turn out and compete for one of the biggest clubs in the world.
One individual who knows exactly what the player can bring to his new side is former Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd, and he has stated that United will find their new signing to be something of a prize asset, with Young always desperate to improve his exciting game whenever he gets the chance.
Meanwhile, for the Red Devils themselves, the arrival of Young is just one more sign that the club are trying to do all they can to add a couple of fresh faces to a squad that, although successful last season in terms of winning the league, found themselves accused a number of times of looking tired and jaded in a few positions. Young is the club’s second signing of the current transfer window after former Blackburn defender Phil Jones was signed, and the new arrivals probably won’t end there, with the United boss likely to appoint one or two others before the start of next season.
On Ferguson’s shopping list of transfer targets for the next few weeks sits Atletico Madrid’s David de Gea, who many believe is the ideal replacement for Edwin van der Sar, who is of course now retired from the club. However, the young goalkeeper is yet to agree anything, so for now United fans need to look forward solely to the arrival of Young.
