Roller Girls Bring A Dead Sport Into The 21st Century

Roller Derby has been around for years and was a staple of the early days of television. It was similar to its better known counterpart, pro wrestling and was seen on many of the same low powered UHF stations in the same bad timeslots. It had a similar borderline sleazy group of promoters and businessman that was common in the regional territory era of pro wrestling. Roller derby didn’t have the success or popularity that pro wrestling did. There was a serious athletic component to be sure, but the dim witted storylines made pro wrestling look like Shakespeare. The sport does have its own history–most know that the LA T-Birds were the perennial champions of’70’s, and Ann Calvello and Ralphie Valladares had been in the sport forever and were considered legends–but it never really stuck in the public consciousness like the pre-Hulk Hogan era of pro wrestling.

When the original purveyors of the sport quit promoting in the early’80s most thought it was dead and gone until a ‘new school’ of roller derby surfaced on cable TV via the A&E reality series Roller Girls. It featured a local, all-girl roller derby league in Austin, Texas and followed the lives of the players on and off the track. A sport that had faded into the lowest level of obscurity had been rediscovered and embraced by an eclectic group of young women. They had kept the same essential format, thrown in a healthy dose of burlesque camp and Varga pin-up inspired glamour and changed the competitive format and renamed the competitions “bouts” a la MMA or boxing. The result was a compelling mixture of glamour, toughness and athleticism driven by a healthy dose of punk rock “do it yourself” mentality.

Today, roller derby is a full blown worldwide phenomenon. There are hundreds of local roller derby leagues not only in the United States, but Canada, Australia and Europe. Most of the local groups similarly play up the campy retro pin-up/hot rod iconography and everyone involved sure looks like they’re having a good time. Between teams there’s a vibe of good natured competitiveness and camaraderie. In the US, these groups exist under the auspices of a national organization called the Womens Flat Track Derby Association. Las Vegas has the ‘Sin City Roller Girls’, Portland, Oregon the ‘Rose City Rollers” and Seattle the ‘Rat City Rollers’. There are now groups in not only the larger and traditionally “hipper” cities but also smaller communities such as Birmingham, Alabama and Omaha, Nebraska.

The young women in roller derby have taken what was cast off TV time filler and revived it into their own distaff ‘action sport’. The community that has sprung up around it bears a striking resemblance to the skateboarding or snowboarding subculture. There’s one big difference–in contrast to more male dominated action sports the roller derby circa 2009 is just the opposite–a living, breathing matriarchal success story.

The new generation rollergirls also pay homage to their sports’ pioneers much in the same way that skateboarders give props to Duane Peters and Tony Alva. Many of the individual group websites have sections devoted to the history of roller derby, and the late Ann Calvello–regarded as the Queen of the original Roller Derby–is revered as something of a patron saint. The Texas Rollergirl group featured in the A&E series has renamed their championship the Calvello Cup.

Before you choose a Fitness & Health Trainer Program, you need to first figure out what your goal is and what you want to achieve. Are you trying to get into shape for your wedding? Do you want to increase your stamina? There are as many different training programs as their are trainers and customers. Once you discover exactly what you want to achieve, you will have good luck in choosing the program that will help you succeed.

When you are interviewing trainers, ask them if they have ever had a customer with your same goals. You will want to make sure that your trainer has expertise in the area that you want to work on. If you are training to run a marathon, make sure that the trainer has worked with customers like this before. If you are training to recover from an illness or injury, it is especially important that your trainer be aware of the medical issues that you may be facing.

Personal training programs work one-on-one with the customer, either in a gym or spa setting, or in the client’s home or place of business. This fitness worker can provide you with recommendations in all aspects of fitness including eating habits, meal preparation and sleep habits. Your training program should also include motivation for those days when you just don’t want to get up and do it.

Certification is vital. Ask to see licensing, and then confirm that it was provided by a qualified fitness organization. Make sure that your trainer is meeting all of the standards of the industry and is continuing with his or her own education in their field. If your fitness professional is not qualified, you could be injured or harmed by an unsuitable program.

If you are having a trainer come into your home, make sure that he/she is insured and bonded. This will protect you if you or the trainer becomes injured during a session, or if there is accidental property damage. Ask to see documentation, and if they can’t provide it, choose someone else.

Request testimonials from other clients of the trainer. Call and speak to these people directly and make sure that they liked this trainer and that their fitness goals were realized. Ask to see photos of the customers, so you can see for yourself that they are fit.

Make sure that you get along with this trainer. Some fitness programs push the customers, and some use humor or a more gentle touch. Don’t hire someone whose approach wouldn’t work for you. Look for a program that is compatible with your personality. If you don’t like your trainer, it won’t work out.

A good fitness program will open with an interview about your general health. Your BMI will be checked, and an evaluation will be made of your starting fitness abilities. You will then be given your initial work out plan as well as diet and sleep recommendations. When you have achieved your initial goals, your trainer will give you another assessment, and a program at a higher level will be started.

Primary Reality To Be Acquainted With About The Two Main Types Of Asthma

Asthma is a lung disease that makes it difficult or even impossible to breathe. About 22 million Americans have this condition. It affects people’s lives and can even cause death. The condition comes in two different forms, with a variety of possible triggers and treatment options are available.

Understanding what goes wrong is important. Our lungs supply our bodies with the oxygen we all need to survive. In normally functioning lungs, air is inhaled, the oxygen is removed and the air is exhaled. In someone with pulmonary issues, the lungs become narrow and breathing is impaired. The lungs constrict and inflammation causes swelling. This is referred to as an asthma attack.

Allergies occur when the body’s immune system overreacts to a substance the individual has contact with. This can lead to breathing problems. Exercise is also a cause of attacks in some people. With occupational triggers, workers inhale substances in the workplace that lead to attacks. Finally, when someone experiences a frequent, non-productive cough, he may have cough variant asthma.

It’s more difficult to determine whether a patient has the cough variant of the condition. This is because, in this form, the patient often has normal lung function. Doctors usually use the same medications to treat cough variant that are used to treat the more common constriction type.

Only a doctor is able to provide a patient with an accurate diagnosis and determine the best way to treat the condition. It is important that patients with both the constriction form and the cough variant consult with a physician.

Treatments vary based on severity of symptoms and underlying causes. For allergic or occupational triggers, avoiding the things that cause the problem can help prevent it. Allergy testing can be used to determine what the person is allergic to. Also, treating the allergies themselves can result in improvement for the patient.

There are a variety of medications that doctors can prescribe for their patients. There are medicines that reduce the frequency of symptoms and attacks. These are taken every day. Also, rescue inhalers are used when an attack occurs to provide immediate relief. Physicians will often prescribe both in order to manage symptoms. However, doctors sometimes need to try different medications and treatments to help each patient achieve optimal results.

People suffering with asthma and it’s symptoms know the disease has serious effects. Doctors work closely with their patients to find the best options and help them manage it. As a result, asthma patients can live active, full lives.

In an asthmatic person, the first stage is the same as in the healthy person. In the second stage however, the airway instead of relaxing to expel, suddenly constricts further provoking acute breathlessness and respiratory distress.
