James Cameron’s name is back on top thanks to the recent release of Avatar, which is said to break new ground in cinematic technology, as well as showcasing his trademark excellent story telling. Cameron made his name years ago with movies like Aliens but Terminator 2 is the one that really made it known that he was capable of making some of the greatest movies of all time. If you, for some reason, haven’t seen it yet, or just haven’t seen it in awhile, go ahead and watch T2 the next time you want to download movies.

T2 is remembered as a major stepping stone for the technology of special effects, alongside Jurassic Park, but people forget that the special effects were not the point of the film, that the effects were there to help the story, not the other way around. Cameron makes great steps in terms of special effects, but the effects are always, always there to serve the story, and not for their own sake.

If for some reason you haven’t seen it yet… Welcome to the 21st Century! Come out from under that rock/the iceberg you’ve been frozen in for decades. We’ll go ahead and quickly describe the premise: Robots take over the world, there’s a human resistance to their rule. They send a robot back to kill the human resistance leader in his teens, the adult resistance leader sends another robot back to serve as a bodyguard. That’s as complicated as it gets. It’s actually pretty straight forward from there.

The movie does take some big steps in terms of special effects. Around twenty years later, the T1000 still stands as one of the greatest CGI characters ever. Every bit as believable as newer creation like Gollum and Doctor Manhattan from The Watchmen.

There’s a purity to this movie. The first Terminator was maybe a little too in love with its heady, high sci-fi concept. This one stays focused on the action and on the characters, not on the twisty turny plot line. James Cameron always focuses on what’s important, not effects, not plot, but on character, and sometimes on hardcore action scenes.

If you haven’t seen it yet… Where the heck have you been for twenty odd years?! If you have, when was the last time you saw it? It’s always worth watching again as it really is one of the greatest American films of the last two decades.

Even if you have seen it, it’s been about twenty years since it was released and now they keep pumping out all these sequels, the television series and so on, and… None of this stuff is as good as T2 was in the first place, so it may be high time for a refresher course so that everyone can try to remember that Terminator was about characters, not heady, over complicated plotlines.

It’s a classic, not just of the action or sci fi genres, it’s just plain a classic, period, and it’s always a good time to watch T2 again.
